7 FOODS THAT RUIN THE QUALITY OF YOUR SKIN!!
As the social media world seems to be jam packed full of fitspo and healthy eating blogs and instagram users we are all making that move to a healthier, fitter way of life. Let us not forget that our skin, as the largest organ on our bodies needs the focus and inspiration as the rest of our bodies. I have found when looking at various clients skin on a daily basis we all have our different triggers that cause us to breakout, what I have found also is how a lot of food groups can actually affect our skin causing acne, dullness, dryness and ageing!
These are some of the worst offenders;
Our love/hate relationship food (well mine anyway!) Refined or added sugar is one of the worst foods to ruin our skins. Sugar is collagens enemy, breaking it down at a dramatic rate. Collagen is a protein in our bodies that keeps our skin smooth, plump and wrinkle free. Sugar raises the blood sugar which creates a spike in insulin which can lead to breakouts. Inflammation is caused by sugar as it is highly acidic and this can cause acne. Although a lot of our fruits and added sugars like agave are high in sugar and acidic, I wouldn’t say cut these out because they hold a lot of nutritional value, if you find that sugar is a sensitivity to your skin, you may need to cut back. The worst offenders are all refined sugars, white/brown sugar, processed foods that contain sugar, syrups, condiments with sugar and high frutose corn syrup.
2. PROCESSED FOODS
Processed foods are not only bad for our waist lines but for our skin! Usually containing high quantities of salt which sucks the water from our skin cells causing dehydration and dryness. Try to buy fresh foods as much as possible or if you buy processed foods at least try to buy the no-salt added varieties!
Some people see this as a myth in skincare that dairy is linked to acne. However, dairy is highly acidic and rich in natural hormones. Depending on your own hormones and how they react with these, you may get an imbalance which cause you to breakout. If you are an acne sufferer and eat dairy, try an elimination diet for a week and take note of any changes, if not it could be another factor but can’t hurt to try!
4. REFINED GRAINS
Refined grains cause a rise in blood sugar just like sugar does so if you are eating refined breads and flours perhaps take a step back from breads and starches for a while.
not technically a food but a major culprit in skin problems. Alcohol is severely dehydrating which can lead to dryness, breakouts, wrinkles and dull looking skin. many premixed beverages are high in sugar and quite acidic. If you need a drink opt for a glass of red once a week 😉
6. PROCESSED FATS
Trans fats are terrible for our skin and our bodies and are often found in processed foods. they dramatically create inflammation which can clog our pores and lead to breakouts. Processed fats can be found in cookies, lollies, dips, dressings, chips, butters and some canned foods. Try stick with raw fats from raw nuts, avocados, cold pressed oils an raw nut butters.
7. FAST FOOD
Now this one should be obvious! While im sure you may go for the ‘healthy option’ when going through the drive through majority of chain food, fast service restaurant foods contain trans fats, food dyes, chemicals, saturated fats, salt, sugar, MSG, hormone laced meats, food stabilisers and more! Expect pore clogging, dehydration, breakouts, acne and wrinkles, it may not happen over night but it will!
So there you have our 7 deadly skin sins.. try keep your diet as clean and natural as possible, full of vegetables, fruits, fish and healthy fats to keep your skin glowing and healthy. What happens on the inside reflects on the outside, so keep that in the back of your mind when making the decision to sneak through that drive through or not 🙂
