Stress less and save your skin!

So you’re doing everything by the book, even with screaming kids or a meeting at 8am or exams coming up, you have your skincare routine down pat, in between work, sport, kids, social life you’re getting a monthly facial… yet your skin is still going cray cray! What the?!

Well unfortunately skin problems aren’t all potions and beauty treatments, and as per your hectic lifestyle above, it makes reason to believe stress could be a contributor!

The way stress affects your skin is that when you are tense, anxious or under pressure, your brain releases cortisol, a stress hormone (as if we need any more hormonal issues) into your blood stream.

This puts our skin into over drive. Oil glands ramp up production, which causes breakouts, it dilates blood vessels which can aggravate rosacea and cause redness and flushing, skin can become dehydrated and more sensitive! Wonderful!

Another ‘exciting’ affect it has on our skin is it makes us look older!!

Don’t furrow your brow now, you will cause lines!

From the age of 20 we lose 1 percent of our skin’s collagen supply annually and let this not cause distress, as you will begin or enhance the stress hormone even more! Triggers such as relationships, money, work, study, can cause stress.

We all know that it already is not good for your heart and brain just as it is unhealthy for your skin. With stress levels higher than ever these days it is certainly affecting more than your energy levels. It is impacting the health and appearance of your skin and body!

Working with internal and external remedies such as good skin care and daily stress management techniques you can certainly get that stressed out skin, under control!

  1. Nourish your body with healthy foods.
  2. Boost circulation with exercise
  3. Practice meditation- if you’re getting tense at work or the kids, step away and take some deeps breaths, re focus and calm yourself.
  4. Good sleeping habits- try removing electronics from the bedroom, having a bath or doing some stretches before hitting the hay.
  5. A glass or three of wine and a smoke could seem great after a long day, try swapping that for a short walk and a fresh juice to unwind- much healthier for you and your family.
  6. Try and walk daily, fresh air and nature are a natural stress reliever. Even 20-30mins before dinner can be so beneficial!

Sensitive VS. Sensitised…

It is becoming more and more common for people to feel they have “sensitive” skin. They have symptoms of prickly, itchy, tight, red, blotchy and dry areas on their skin and this scares them away from using quality skincare in case they get a reaction.

This is so sad for your therapists because there is so much to offer and you as a client can gain so much from your skincare and skin treatments but it’s all about education!

There is in fact a difference between sensitive skin and sensitised skin! A true sensitive skin condition is caused by a genetic predisposition. They usually have a fairer, thinner skin; suffer from allergies and skin diseases such as rosacea, psoriasis and eczema.

Sensitised skin is a reflection of your environment, lifestyle and physiology. Stress, hormones, climate, pollution, cosmetics, medical procedures and lifestyle factors such as diet, smoking and alcohol can all lead to a sensitised skin. A sensitised skin displays more of a reactive response to these factors which other skins can tolerate. The symptoms can be similar to that of a true sensitive skin with the itching, burning, redness which is an inflammatory response.

Once we figure out what and where your sensitivity is coming from it is much easier to treat! What we want to do is control the inflammation and get the skin healthy again!

Sensitised skins generally have an impaired barrier which is allowing the microbes, pollutants and irritants to get in our skin and cause the inflammation.

Think of a layer in our skin that acts as a shield to protect us, has little holes in it, letting the badies in. We need to repair those holes to strengthen our skin so our ‘shield’ is strong again.

Finding out where the trigger is coming from makes it alot easier! The list can be ridiculously long and alot of lifestyle factors we may have to be willing to sacrifice or find an alternative for. Booking an appointment with your therapist is the best way to figure out a treatment plan and the correct skin care to be using. Your therapist can help you find out what triggers your sensitivity and how to protect your skin from further damage and premature aging!

Once you have repaired your barrier you can then look at treating any other skin concerns you may have and get your skin to a healthy state which leaves you looking fresh, hydrated, even and younger!

Dermalogica Ultracalming range is designed for a sensitized skin that is reactive or recently resurfaced. The products contain UltraCalming™ Complex    which had been researched and developed to treat all the triggers of a sensitized skin and protect and repair it from further damage!

7 Deadly skin sins…

7 FOODS THAT RUIN THE QUALITY OF YOUR SKIN!!

As the social media world seems to be jam packed full of fitspo and healthy eating blogs and instagram users we are all making that move to a healthier, fitter way of life. Let us not forget that our skin, as the largest organ on our bodies needs the focus and inspiration as the rest of our bodies. I have found when looking at various clients skin on a daily basis we all have our different triggers that cause us to breakout, what I have found also is how a lot of food groups can actually affect our skin causing acne, dullness, dryness and ageing!

These are some of the worst offenders;

1. SUGAR

Our love/hate relationship food (well mine anyway!) Refined or added sugar is one of the worst foods to ruin our skins. Sugar is collagens enemy, breaking it down at a dramatic rate. Collagen is a protein in our bodies that keeps our skin smooth, plump and wrinkle free. Sugar raises the blood sugar which creates a spike in insulin which can lead to breakouts. Inflammation is caused by sugar as it is highly acidic and this can cause acne. Although a lot of our fruits and added sugars like agave are high in sugar and acidic, I wouldn’t say cut these out because they hold a lot of nutritional value, if you find that sugar is a sensitivity to your skin, you may need to cut back. The worst offenders are all refined sugars, white/brown sugar, processed foods that contain sugar, syrups, condiments with sugar and high frutose corn syrup.

2. PROCESSED FOODS

Processed foods are not only bad for our waist lines but for our skin! Usually containing high quantities of salt which sucks the water from our skin cells causing dehydration and dryness. Try to buy fresh foods as much as possible or if you buy processed foods at least try to buy the no-salt added varieties!

3. MILK

Some people see this as a myth in skincare that dairy is linked to acne. However, dairy is highly acidic and rich in natural hormones. Depending on your own hormones and how they react with these, you may get an imbalance which cause you to breakout. If you are an acne sufferer and eat dairy, try an elimination diet for a week and take note of any changes, if not it could be another factor but can’t hurt to try!

4. REFINED GRAINS

Refined grains cause a rise in blood sugar just like sugar does so if you are eating refined breads and flours perhaps take a step back from breads and starches for a while.

5. ALCOHOL

not technically a food but a major culprit in skin problems. Alcohol is severely dehydrating which can lead to dryness, breakouts, wrinkles and dull looking skin. many premixed beverages are high in sugar and quite acidic. If you need a drink opt for a glass of red once a week 😉

6. PROCESSED FATS

Trans fats are terrible for our skin and our bodies and are often found in processed foods. they dramatically create inflammation which can clog our pores and lead to breakouts. Processed fats can be found in cookies, lollies, dips, dressings, chips, butters and some canned foods. Try stick with raw fats from raw nuts, avocados, cold pressed oils an raw nut butters.

7. FAST FOOD

Now this one should be obvious! While im sure you may go for the ‘healthy option’ when going through the drive through majority of chain food, fast service restaurant foods contain trans fats, food dyes, chemicals, saturated fats, salt, sugar, MSG, hormone laced meats, food stabilisers and more! Expect pore clogging, dehydration, breakouts, acne and wrinkles, it may not happen over night but it will!

So there you have our 7 deadly skin sins.. try keep your diet as clean and natural as possible, full of vegetables, fruits, fish and healthy fats to keep your skin glowing and healthy. What happens on the inside reflects on the outside, so keep that in the back of your mind when making the decision to sneak through that drive through or not 🙂

Stiletto nails… Hot or not?

From red carpets to runways the ‘Stiletto nail’ look is hot!

Lana Del Ray, Rihanna, GaGa and Fergie seem to be keeping the trend strong and the quirky nail art and bold colours are making them a statement throughout the beauty world. Being a therapist my nails are always short and square so I don’t claw my clients mid facial but I’m defiantly impressed and slightly jealous I don’t have beautiful talons.

D.I.Y is pretty simple so get creative and try at home!

What you need:

  • a set of glue on nails- you can buy fairly cheap on ebay or most beauty retailers
  • scissors
  • nail file
  • base coat & top coat
  • nail polish/s
1. Start by giving yourself a mini manicure, I recommend cutting your nails, filing and pushing cuticles back.
2. Apply a small drop of glue on your nail bed.
3. Press on the nail as close to the cuticle as possible and press down for about 10 seconds to ensure nail is stuck on. If it doesn’t quite fit you can file to shape before gluing.
4. Use the scissors to cut the nail at an angle to create a point.
5. Use your nail file to smooth the edges to achieve desired shape.
6. Paint on base coat.
7. This is where you get creative! you can use one colour to make a bold statement or you can mix it up and create shapes and designs… the choices are endless!
8. Finish with a top coat and your stiletto nails are complete! Love it!

Dermalogica at it again!

New Multivitamin power serum is my now new fave of Dermalogica’s Age Smart range. With the desire to keep on top of the beauty industry’s ever growing anti-aging market they have found newer forms of getting the powerful antioxidants and vitamins into the skin by a method called Micro-encapsulation.

Basically the method is to jam pack Liposomes (microscopic, bubble like structures) with active vitamins that remain stable and they are able to penetrate deep into the skin for maximum results!

This gorgeous serum has a smooth velvety silicone base which applies smooth and evenly. Use morning and night under your moisturiser.

Fantastic benefits:

-Helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles

-Stimulates collagen synthesis

-enhances cell turnover and cell renewal

-provides antioxidant protection

-helps control pigmentation

GREAT SKIN IN TWO WEEKS!

There is always something going on with our skin, it tells us so much about our health and how we are feeling. As the largest organ on our bodies skin health is optimised by our diet, skincare routine, exercise choices and sleeping patterns. I have a list of great all over healthy choices that will get your skin looking and feeling great as well as your overall general well being!

Add more water!

Water is our body’s best friend! Water increases the production of new blood and muscle cells; kick starts our metabolism, helps us absorb nutrients, clears out toxins, balances our lymph system and keeps us hydrated! Dehydration causes dryness and sallow looking skin. Try carrying a water bottle with you throughout the day and adding a squeeze of fresh lemon for a Vitamin C boost!

 Cut the crap!

Sugar and fast food is our enemy! Full of processed fats, sugars and excess sodium these can cause inflammation in the body and skin. Cutting out the excess sugar, salt and unhealthy fats are the best way to see healthy changes in your skin and body!

 Eat a rainbow!

Fill your plate with fresh low sugar fruit and leafy green veggies, fish and healthy fats. These foods have nourishing ingredients for our bodies that won’t cause breakouts. Berries and citrus fruits are full of antioxidants that will fight free radicals that cause aging, spinach, kale, sweet potatoes carrots are great sources of beta-carotene that fight breakouts, dehydration, wrinkles, redness, unevenness, acne and give your skin a healthy glow!

 Healthy fats!

Our skin cells need some fats to function effectively. All our cell membranes are made up of a mixture of fats and proteins so by consuming plenty of omega-3 fats and healthy oils we are helping our cell membranes retain water and nutrients and remain hydrated and our skin glowing! Plant passed, raw fat sources such as avocado, cold-pressed coconut oil, olive oil, and flaxseed and hemp seed oil are great! Add hemp, chia and flaxseeds to meals or smoothies or snacking on raw almonds, pumpkin and sunflower seed are also a great way to add to your healthy fat diet!

 Press the snooze button!

We all are lacking sleep these days but hitting the sack a little earlier can help your skin and all over health dramatically! At a minimum we need at least 7-8 hours of sleep. Rest will give you great skin and energy levels quickly! It will also keep you energised and motivated throughout the day!

 Keep it gentle!

I’m loving yoga right now! It creates an essential blood flow through your body and lymph system. It is a great stress relief and most classes have meditation incorporated, if Yoga is not your thing, a nice walk outdoors or a gentle swim can do the same. High intensity workouts can cause excess cortisol which is a hormone that can trigger stress, less stress means better skin! If your one to hit the gym hard, add half an hour of slow stretching and meditation to relax you after that spin class!

Get into a routine!

Your skin care routine can be simple, as long as you have one!  Wash your face every night, even if you didn’t wear makeup. Everyday pollutants, sweat and dead skin cells need to be removed to stop breakouts. Cleanse, scrub and moisturise! Cleanse away the crap; exfoliate the dead skin cells and clear pores and hydrate! Use an SPF daily to protect skin from free radicals that break down collagen and cause pigmentation. You want products full of quality ingredients such as antioxidants and vitamins that will feed your skin! Every skin is different so you want something suited for you individually!

Skin products defined…

So let us begin by stating the fact that no two skins are the same. Look at your bestie or your mum or a colleague and you know what I’m saying. You get breakouts, mum is dry and dehydrated and BFF is so super sensitive she will use a makeup wipe and her skin goes red as a tomato. So this can make you realise that using skincare to suit you and only you not only stops your sister from pinching your moisturiser but it means you get the best results suited to your individual needs and achieve your best skin possible!

Buying something off the shelf at the supermarket is no longer an option for you lady and the reason being is that anything you get from the local supermarket, your mum, sister and bestie can also get and use and that doesn’t seem right considering you’re so different!

Supermarket brands dont come with the quality ingredients we are after (and ill delve into ingredients at a later date) and if they do, they dont have a high enough quanity to achieve anything worth while which is why they are sold at the supermarket and anyone jill and sally can buy them.. see where I’m heading here?

“But salon products are soo expensive” I hear you whine. Well I will tell you why! Antioxidants, AHA’s, retinoids, ceremides, peptides, Hyaluronic acid, amino acids etc – these will become familiar to you in good time- these ingredients are the reason you use good quality skin care because these are the lovely little wonders that are going to make all the difference in your skin health. This is what you are paying for in a professional skincare product.

We want active, potent ingredients that are going to strenthen and change our skin to achive the results we want and you also get the products prescribed to your individual needs!

It goes back to the saying- quality not quantity.

Skin is the largest organ on our bodies, it protects disease and bacteria from getting to our insides and blood stream, it tells us how we are feeling, (think sleep deprived and hungover sunday face = dehydrated, dark circles, bags under the eyes etc) It is the first thing that people see when they are talking to you.

I say give it the treatment it deserves and start giving it the quality it deserves!

Willow Beauty Online is here to help, our aim is to close the gap between you wanting professional skincare that works and dealing with a professioanl skin therapist, without the major pricetags and from the comfort of your own home!

We are here to help get your skin sorted but also provide you with the fantastic skincare at cheaper than salon prices sent right to your door!!

Get excited!!
